Seal Lagoon at Heceta Head

Just south of Heceta Head on the central coast of Oregon, there's a pullout on the highway with a great view of Heceta Head lighthouse. At the right-hand corner of the pullout, you can look straight down the cliff to see a hidden, sheltered lagoon full of seals and sea lions. They're graceful acrobats in the water, and it was beautiful to watch them playing in this clear, calm lagoon from above. Sea Lion Caves is just south of here, so there are always plenty of them around.

Heceta Head is the place I chose for an informal memorial in 2022 with just my dad and stepmom, one year after my grandparents' deaths, when it became clear there wouldn't be a larger formal gathering of family and friends. Traveling and gathering safely was still very disrupted due to Covid. We have so many more tools now to keep each other safe than we did three or four years ago. Making use of our affordable access to rapid tests, quality masks, and boosters can still make a huge difference to those most vulnerable in our communities.

In this painting, I added Nootka Rose to the cliffside scrub. It wasn't there, but it's a coastal native that is appropriate to the site. Both my grandmothers loved roses and grew them in their gardens.

I didn't actually discover the seal lagoon until a year after our memorial, when I happened to stand in just the right spot, and looked down. One of the many reasons I love the ocean and the coast - even when you think you know a place, there's always more to discover and delight. 🦭

I gave blood for the first time last week. Growing up, it wasn't something I saw being done in my family or my close community. So it just hadn't become an active possibility in my mind. My partner decided recently to give blood as a way to help people, and I realized, I can help people in that way too. I'm posting about it, in case that's true for someone else too.

I had a good experience, and I plan to donate again. I chose to donate through @americanredcross which supplies patients around the country, but if you want your gift to stay local to the Pacific Northwest, @bloodworksnw supplies most of our local hospitals. The day I donated, Red Cross was also matching blood donations with a cash gift to @homeplateyouthservices to support unhoused youth in our area.

Building resilient communities means *everyone* has access to health care, food, and safe shelter.

AND I learned my blood type, and got some nice snacks. 🍪🧃

Cascade Head from Treasure Cave

This incredible sea cave frames a view of Cascade Head on the central coast of Oregon. Accessible only for a few hours during the lowest tides of the year, the isolated, unnamed cave's wave-carved rock walls are encrusted with gooseneck barnacles, green anemones, and sea stars.

I had the privilege of visiting here during my 2021 artist residency at @sitkacenter. This place was a healing gift - wild, magical, and full of life at a time when I needed it most. My values shifted that year, and I've been catching up ever since - slowly learning how to stay kind, while no longer believing that I protect myself or anyone else by staying silent.

This was my final piece created in 2024. It has been a tough few months for me, and even more for those most vulnerable in our world. I find myself returning to my study of the moon for grounding, connection, strength. White brings light, something I have been struggling to find, to create some tiny amount of balance. White is also the color of grief in Chinese tradition. I'm grateful for the many kindnesses of the many humans who have supported and shared in this ongoing work 🖤
