Spring 2017 News from the Studio – it was a busy winter between painting an outdoor mural in Los Angeles, creating a new series of abstract encaustic paintings at an artist residency, and developing new ceramic sculptures in my Oregon studio!

Klamath Basket
2025
Reclaimed fishing rope, thread

On display now at Grants Pass Museum of Art @grantspassmuseumofart in the @osuartaboutagriculture touring exhibit.

Klamath Basket commemorates the return of salmon to 420 miles of the Klamath River in Oregon and California, following the world's largest dam removal project in 2024. Within 10 days of dam removal, more than 6,000 Chinook salmon were observed migrating upstream into habitat that was blocked by multiple dams for over 100 years.

Stitched from reclaimed fishing gear sourced from the Klamath River, as well as ocean fisheries and beach cleanups in the Pacific Northwest and Kauai.

This artwork was made possible through the generous welcome, sharing of knowledge, and support I received from Native artists and culture bearers Brittany Britton @2brittbritt2 and Julian Markussen Jr. @julian_jr1 for my 2023 exhibit of Ghost Net Landscape at Cal Poly Humboldt @calpolyhumboldtgalleries. Smith Rock ~ Animal Village

"Smith Rock ~ Animal Village" is included in Rental Sales Gallery's Spring Show, opening ✨tonight✨ April 24 from 4-7pm and continuing thru May 30.

This painting's title comes from a 2022 interview between @tarakerzhner and @lennecefer hosted by @nativesoutdoors about Native relationships with the place also known as Smith Rock, near Bend, in central Oregon's high desert. (Interview link in my bio.) The legends of Animal Village reflect the rich wildlife found here, and the long history and presence of the Northern Paiute.

I first visited Animal Village in 2023, walked the trails, and took reference photos for this painting. When I visit a new place, I'm curious about its history and naming. I found several conflicting and vague references to the Smith Rock name. Learning about the traditional name for this place, Animal Village, felt aligned with this incredible environment.

The linked interview also includes an animated video of the Animal Village place name story, narrated by Elder Wilson Wewa, Warm Springs Paiute Tribe's oral historian. Wewa's oral histories are collected in the book "Legends of the Northern Paiute," which includes the excellent chapter "Why Badger is Flat and Mean," involving Coyote, dancing, and farts.
