Beams - forest string art installation by Emily Miller

I’m excited to announce a new public art installation, “Beams,” on display this summer at the Tillamook Forest Center outside Portland, Oregon. “Beams” is installed 11′ above the River View Trail, inviting visitors to look up and linger on the forest trails. The installation interacts with sunlight beautifully at different times of day. This video was shot on a sunny day just after noon.

Newly updated with a hand-tied bright orange fringe inside the three necks of this tall basket. I love adding hidden surprises in my baskets - if you're curious enough to peek inside, you deserve a reward 🍬🧡🍊💥

The bright orange ghost net comes from @surfriderkauai, an endless source of materials and inspiration. The softer orange, yellow, and striped ropes come from responsibly recycled Westport WA commercial crab fisheries.

Stonefoot Basket
9" x 9" x 5"
Maine coast lobster fishing rope, thread, beach stones
2022 / 2024

I started this basket during my 2022 residency @haystack_school on Deer Isle, Maine, using locally reclaimed lobster-pot rope and beach stones. Then it sat, with the stones in place but unsecured, for 18 months, until I finally figured out the mechanics of permanently attaching the stones to the basket. Each stone is wrapped, stitched, and glued, so it stays in place but remains flexible and moveable, like little urchin feet.

Stonefoot Basket is included in Columbia Basin Basketry Guild's group show "Baskets, Naturally" on view now at Multnomah Arts Center @macapdx thru June 15.

Stonington Opera House Winter Sunset, 11x14" watercolor. I painted this for myself, missing Deer Isle and my grandparents during this winter season. I took the reference photo at Thanksgiving, years ago, during the first snows of the year. I remember rushing out into the snow as we gathered for dinner, the sunset was blazing golden on the water and the snow was sparkling, and I had to take photos before it faded. (Family was literal seconds away from eating without me when I raced back inside, hah!) This feels like an unusually "sweet" painting for me, but it was just exactly what I wanted. This place, to me, is absolute magic. And sometimes ya just want glowing lights, safe harbor, and the perfect hush of fresh snow.

Protea wreaths have always been grownup goals for me. As I still haven't achieved that level of adulting in Real Life, I decided to paint one instead. Metallic gold paint adds some holiday sparkle ~ a bit of extra light for your Solstice.

Haystack Beach, watercolor, 9" x 7". Summer 2022 / Winter 2023. Granite boulders at the edge of the iconic sand beach at @haystack_school in Deer Isle, Maine. I sat here and sketched this scene last summer during Haystack's Open Studio Residency. Today I finally felt inspired to finish up the piece, a year and a half later. Things are still taking me more time - much more time, sometimes. My time at Haystack was a beautiful and complicated journey that I haven't been able to re-visit and process much yet.

This week would have been my grandmother's 97th birthday. It's hard to believe it's been almost 3 years since she died. Strange that my time at Haystack was 18 months ago. Although my work there was centered on her death, in truth it was about her lifelong love of this place, in all its wildness. Looking through my residency photos to find a reference to finish this painting, I see so much vibrancy, joy, and life. I am glad to know it.

My grandmother was a private, sensitive, and perceptive person, often a prickly person, and Deer Isle people were the ones she trusted to hold her in community, through life and into death. She and my grandfather are buried here, less than two miles from this beach. I am glad to know it.

Explosion of Light 🌄 8" x 11" plein air watercolor at Cannon Beach. A dear friend came to visit last week, for a last-minute getaway to the Oregon coast. We've been plein air painting together for 18 years, with a small group started on Kauai by @helenturnerfinearts. Over the years we've painted together to celebrate birthdays and explore new homes as our life journeys unfolded. Last month one of our group passed away, a joyful and loving woman who taught me a lot about making the choice every day to find happiness. I'm aware of the "No Sunsets" rule surrounding the end of life. What I see here is the incredible glow of light.
