I’m excited to be artist-in-residence for July 2024 at the Chehalem Cultural Center<\/a> ceramics studio in Newberg, OR. I’ll be offering a sliding-scale Heritage workshop<\/a> during my residency, along with Open Studio hours<\/a> while I work on new projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*** NEW DATE for Heritage workshop<\/a>: Friday July 26 ***<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During my Open Studio time, I’ll be creating a new Urchin Cup design to add to my Urchin Bowls<\/a> series; and experimenting with integrating ocean mud and reclaimed fishing net into ceramics. The ocean mud was gathered near my grandparents’ home place in Deer Isle, Maine, during my 2022 artist residency at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. The gray mud is full of mica dust decomposed from the coastal granite bedrock, and it sparkles beautifully in the light. I’ll also be using fishing rope and net gathered from my family home places in Maine and Kauai, and from my current home in the Pacific Northwest. I currently use this material to make my Ghost Net Baskets<\/a>. This will be my first exploration of using it in ceramics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To complement this deeply rooted work, I’m offering a workshop centered on heritage, identity, and origins, where we will co-create a community artwork for exhibit at Chehalem’s upcoming Ceramics Residency gallery exhibition. My community art practice is an opportunity to share histories, explore our identities, and play with creativity together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heritage Workshop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Join us to create a ceramic talisman \u201cmemory tile\u201d that shares your story in clay. What simple, everyday objects hold deep meaning for you? Bring a few items that symbolize your identity, origins, or heritage. We will press the items into soft clay and write a few words about their significance. Participants will create 2 pieces, one to keep and one to share in the upcoming CCC residency exhibit. Pieces to keep will be fired and ready for pickup 2 weeks after workshop date. Pieces shared in the residency exhibit will be ready for pickup after the exhibit closes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time:<\/strong> 5-6pm, 6-7pm, or 7-8pm
This is a one-hour workshop with three sessions starting on the hour at 5pm, 6pm, and 7pm.
The ceramics studio can accommodate up to 9 students per hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
