The four directions in Chinese cosmology are represented by animals: bird, snake, tiger, and dragon. Here, the dragon has been replaced by a cave filled with crystals. This project began with a simple visual and material concept, but I was drawn in to fascinating historical research into Chinese totemic culture and my own Chinese ancestry.

The glass and wood bars are separated by thin brass sheets that reflect bright light into the translucent glass. The 1/4" thick steel base is coated with a satin black rust-proof finish, and floats on 1" inset feet.
