Summer Heat at Short Beach #719
The sky turns hazy with summertime heat on the Oregon coast. Tall wildflowers frame this view of the sea stack at Short Beach, a hidden gem just south of Cape Meares near Oceanside, on the north coast of Oregon. Driftwood and stones above the tideline, soft sand below. Short Creek cuts across the south end of the beach to meet the sea.
The bright purple flowers are known as fireweed. This was one of the first plants to grow back after the devastation of the Mt. St. Helens eruption in 1980. Fireweed has been an important plant to Native cultures for thousands of years.
