This painting's title is borrowed from a 2022 interview about the Northern Paiute history, legends, and modern relationship with the place also known as Smith Rock, near Bend, in central Oregon's high desert. Read the interview here. The legends of Animal Village reflect the rich wildlife found here.

In this painting, metallic gold watercolor adds sparkle in the Crooked River's reflections of the sunlit cliffsides. Silvery blue sagebrush, bright yellow-green rabbitbrush (chamisa), and the slender leaves of wild rye grasses fill the open plains.

Since the 1980s, Animal Village (Smith Rock) has been a popular rock climbing destination, with over 1800 routes up these sheer volcanic cliffs. On the right edge of the painting, the lower switchbacks of the Misery Ridge hiking trail are visible. Along the Crooked River Trail (center left), a group of tiny people offer perspective on the massive cliff faces rising 700 ft above the river.
