Promise of Sweetness #1059 Purchase
Vibrant orange persimmons glow like lanterns between the autumn leaves at Lan Su Chinese Garden in downtown Portland, Oregon. These natural lanterns are echoed by the glow of traditional Chinese lanterns hanging in the covered porch surrounding the Hall of Brocade Clouds, illuminating the carved wooden details lining the hall. In this mid-November view, the Hachiya persimmons are still unripe and bitterly astringent. They will be sweetened by winter frost, ripening as the leaves fall from the tree, serving as bright decorations on the bare branches until the New Year.
Beyond the persimmon tree, a small footbridge arches over the edge of Lake Zither, and a glimpse of the garden's Rock Mountain is visible between the willow and pine trees. The Rock Mountain is decorated with orange and red chrysanthemums for the autumn Chrysanthemum Festival.
Lan Su Chinese Garden was constructed in 2000 in Portland's historic Chinatown neighborhood. The garden was designed and built by Chinese artisans from Portland's sister city, Suzhou, and is one of the most authentic Chinese gardens outside of China. Lan Su was designed as a traditional walled scholar's garden and occupies a full city block.
