Interview conducted on the Klamath River with Yurok tribal canoe captain Julian Markussen, Jr.

Klamath Basket commemorates the return of salmon to 420 miles of the Klamath River in Oregon and California, following the world's largest dam removal project in 2024. Led by the Yurok and Karuk Tribes in partnership with nonprofit organizations, lawyers, scientists, and activists, the project allows the lower Klamath River to flow freely for the first time in more than a century.

Stitched from reclaimed fishing gear sourced from the Klamath River, as well as ocean fisheries and beach cleanups in the Pacific Northwest and Kauai.

The Klamath River once produced the third-largest run of salmon in the lower 48 states. It was the lifeblood of tribes throughout the region, and supported important commercial and recreational fisheries. Within 10 days of dam removal, more than 6,000 Chinook salmon were observed migrating upstream into habitat that was blocked by multiple dams for over 100 years.

This artwork was made possible through the generous welcome, sharing of knowledge, and support I received from Native artists and culture bearers Brittany Britton and Julian Markussen, Jr., as part of my 2023 exhibit of Ghost Net Landscape at Cal Poly Humboldt.

This artwork is included in Oregon State University's Art About Agriculture Permanent Collection. The collection is exhibited at OSU campuses, and by loan agreement throughout Oregon and other parts of the Northwest.

I am donating 20% of profits from the purchase award to the Klamath River Fund.

This artwork is on display at the Art About Agriculture: Field Report exhibit thru Nov. 25, 2026
