Bridge at Fernhill Wetlands #1078 Purchase
An arched wooden bridge frames a view of the bright stream leading to Fernhill Lake, looking out through the aspen trees in the Water Garden area at Fernhill Wetlands in Forest Grove, Oregon.
The Water Garden area was designed by Hoichi Kurisu, a Japanese-American landscape architect acclaimed for creating healing gardens. At Fernhill, freshly aerated water tumbles to Fernhill Lake through the water garden of artfully placed boulders, pine trees and graceful arched bridges constructed of Douglas fir.
Fernhill is a manmade water treatment wetland that cleans, cools, and naturalizes the water after initial treatment at Forest Grove wastewater facility. The water then flows onward to the Tualatin River. Fernhill Wetlands was built in 2014 from 90 acres of old sewage lagoons transformed into treatment wetlands with native plants and public trails. I first visited Fernhill when I moved to Oregon from Kauai that same year. Exploring my new home on Google Maps, I noticed the "Sewage Lagoon" label at the edge of town, and had to investigate! Over the past 12 years, I've seen Fernhill evolve from a flat, open area with gravel paths between sparse young plantings, into a vibrant ecosystem full of life.
