Bok Choy #1070 Purchase
Tenth in a series of monthly sketches exploring my Hakka Chinese heritage and personal family history through traditional, seasonal foods and recipes.
Bok choy ็ฝ่ is Cantonese for "white vegetable". I grew up enjoying this mild Chinese cabbage in simple stir-fries. It is one of the most basic Chinese ingredients from my childhood memories.
Bok choy is native to China, with archaeological evidence in the Yellow and Yangtze River Deltas dating back thousands of years. Bok choy is a popular symbol of good luck and prosperity, since the Chinese pronunciation of Bok Choy sounds similar to the phrase โone hundred fortunes.โ Jade carvings of bok choy are especially popular in Hong Kong.
